NPWT (Negative Pressure Wound Therapy) applies a localized vacuum to help the healing of the wound while stimulating granulation tissue formation and removing exudate.
There are five main mechanisms by which the application of negative pressure to a wound may aid in the healing process: Wound retraction Stimulation of granulation tissue formation Continuous removal of exudate Continuous wound cleansing Reduction of interstitial edema
Indications for Use NPWT can be applied to various types of wounds: Diabetic ulcers Pressure ulcers Vascular ulcers (includes venous ulcers and arterial ulcers) Burn wounds Surgical wounds Trauma–induced wounds Contraindications: Exposed vasculature, nerves, anastomotic site, or organs. Necrotic tissue with eschar present. Untreated osteomyelitis. Non–enteric and unexplored fistulas. Malignancy in the wound bed.
